In a rare case, a Brazilian baby named Matheus Gabriel was born holding a contraceptive intrauterine device (IUD) that had failed to prevent pregnancy. His mother, Queidy Araujo de Oliveira, carried him to term despite challenges, and both are now safe.

A baby born in Brazil has captured global attention after photos showed him holding a contraceptive coil, the very device that was supposed to prevent his mother from conceiving.

The baby boy, named Matheus Gabriel, was delivered at Hospital Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Nerópolis, Goiás, according to reports. His mother, Queidy Araujo de Oliveira, had been using a copper intrauterine device (IUD) for nearly two years. The small T-shaped contraceptive is over 99% effective, but in this rare case, it failed.

Doctors explained that while IUDs are designed to release copper into the womb to prevent fertilization, no method of contraception is guaranteed.

Mother’s Pregnancy Journey

Queidy only discovered her pregnancy during a routine medical examination. When doctors confirmed the IUD was still in place, they advised against removing it since doing so could risk the baby’s life.

Her pregnancy was not without complications. She experienced bleeding and a partial detachment of the placenta, but she was able to carry the pregnancy to term. Despite the difficulties, Queidy gave birth safely.

The Viral Birth Moment

Soon after delivery, the attending doctor, Natalia Rodrigues, noticed the contraceptive coil and placed it in the newborn’s tiny hand. A photo taken inside the delivery room showed Matheus holding the IUD as if it were a small victory trophy.

Rodrigues later shared the images on Instagram, writing: “Holding my victory trophy: the IUD that couldn’t handle me!” The post quickly went viral, with thousands of comments calling the baby a “fighter” and a “miracle child.”

Medical Experts’ Perspective

Medical professionals say cases like this are extremely rare. An IUD usually remains effective for 5 to 10 years, depending on the type, but device displacement or positioning issues can occasionally lead to pregnancy.

Doctors emphasize that while contraceptives significantly reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy, no method is 100% effective.

As for Queidy and her son, both are reported to be in good health. The family says Matheus’ birth, though unexpected, is nothing short of a miracle.
