Your baby is also growing bigger as your energy level returns, so might your appetite.Â
Fully developed genitals will make their big entrance this week. But they may still be difficult to detect on an ultrasound.
This week, hair follicles begin to form deep within your baby’s skin.
Your baby can now use facial muscles to smile and grimace as you enter your second trimester.

In this week, your baby has developed facial muscles and can now smile, frown, and make other facial expressions. Your baby is also starting to suck and chew as well as sucking their thumb.
There is a lot of movement this week for your baby. Your baby’s hands and feet are more mobile and active, even if you can’t feel their small punches and kicks yet. Their movements are getting more synchronized as their joints grow. In this week, fingernails and toenails begin to grow.
Your baby can now turn their head in different directions, and the grab reflex changes with time. The baby will try to grab an object in response to being touched. They can touch the umbilical cord and fetal membrane.
Your baby’s face is fully forming, and this week, there is an addition of eyelashes and eyebrows. Although the legs still have some extending to do, the rest of your baby’s body is growing more proportional to the head. The muscles in the baby’s neck are also becoming stronger, and their head is no longer drooping forward.
Your baby is now breathing through the help of the placenta because their lungs are not yet functioning. Their internal organs are also now fully formed and perform different functions in the body.Â
The sex organs that started growing in week 13 are now fully grown, and your baby now has a gender. You still will not know the gender through ultrasound, but in a few weeks, you will find out if your baby is a boy or a girl.
The most amazing development this week is that you cannot feel your baby yet, but your baby can feel you and show reactions to your moods. If you’re happy, sad, or nervous, your baby knows it and reacts to it. In a few weeks, you will be able to feel your baby’s reactions too!
Your baby’s weight has increased to be twice the former size and is still growing. At week 14, your baby is the size of a navel orange or a kiwi fruit. Your baby now weighs about 43 grams and is around 3.42 inches in length.Â
As for your belly, your uterus has developed to fill your pelvis and ascend into your abdominal cavity at 14 weeks of pregnancy, and you may notice a soft, smooth oval as your baby bump.
At 16 weeks pregnant, you have about 26 more weeks to complete your pregnancy journey.
The second trimester is almost every pregnant woman’s favourite because many first-trimester pregnancy symptoms wane. You’re most likely feeling a bit more energetic and more human. Luckily, your breasts aren’t as tender and sore as last trimester. Also, there’s a decrease in morning sickness and frequent urination.
The exciting part is that it may be time to start maternity shopping as you may begin to show instead of looking overeaten.
Your uterus has expanded to fill the pelvic region and ascend into your lower abdomen. You might even be able to feel the FUNDUS which is the top of your uterus, if you press down right above your pelvic bone in the lower abdomen.
At 14 weeks, you may or may not discover some yellow discharges from your breast called COLOSTRUM. It is the first form of milk you produce during pregnancy and is released after birth.
Your breast will also be less tender and sore, as well as increasing in size, so you should get ready to purchase new bras.
You may also feel some pains on the side of your belly. The pain will get worse when you stand, but do not worry as the pain is just a side effect of your uterus expansion.
You may observe some visible veins on your abdomen, legs, and breasts. The prominence differs from person to person because of genetics. You should consider consulting your dermatologist about any skin changes that you observe.
Rapid weight gain is common this week. It is good, but try not to gain too much weight. Your doctor will guide you on gaining weight healthily.
You may get a cold and stuffy nose this week as well. Your gums may also get swollen and bleed.
