Daniella Hines recalled her shock during the delivery of her nearly 14-pound baby, Annan. After a tougher C-section than with her first son, she says her family views him as a big blessing.

A Florida mother, Daniella Hines, has surprised herself, medical staff, and her family alike by delivering a baby boy weighing 13 pounds, 15 ounces at St. Joseph’s Hospital-South Florida on September 3, 2025.

“I remember thinking, ‘What are they pulling out of me? What is going on here?” Hines said of the delivery. The 40-year-old mother welcomed her son via cesarean section, a method chosen due to anticipated risks tied to his size.

The mom of two added that the discomfort she endured during the surgical delivery was very different from when she birthed her older son, Andre Jr., who himself arrived weighing a staggering 12 pounds, 11 ounces.

The newborn, named Annan, nearly doubled the average birth weight of about 7 pounds. Standard newborn clothing and diapers proved too small, and he already fits into clothes and diapers generally worn by babies six to nine months old.

The Hines family attributes Annan’s size in part to parental height; Mrs. Hines stands at six feet tall, while her husband, Andre Sr., is six feet two. Despite expectations of a larger baby (given Andre Jr.’s birth), the nearly 14-pound weight still came as a shock.

Mrs. Hines is recovering from the cesarean. She says that though the preparation for newborns (clothes, diapers, etc.) expected for a typical size needs replacing, the family considers Annan a “big blessing.”

Medical Experts’ Perspective

Nurses and hospital staff described Annan as a local celebrity, visiting the maternity ward to catch a glimpse of Annan, who has affectionately been nicknamed “Sumo.”

Medical experts note that while such high birth weights are rare, they are not entirely unprecedented. Similar births have occurred around the world, including a 22-pound, 8-ounce boy born in Italy in 1955. He was born to Carmellina Fedele and holds the Guinness World Record for the heaviest baby ever. However, Annan’s birth likely sets a new record at St. Joseph’s Hospital-South.
